Abstract/Contents:Nitrogenase activities, estimated by C2H2 reduction, in field samples of roots with adhering soil, washed roots, root surface soil and rhizosphere soil were 8.55, 7.60, 0.18 and 0.07 n moles C2H4 hr-1g-1. Sucrose addition enhanced nitrogenase activity in soil containing Azotobacter paspali. The nitrogenase activity in undisturbed P. notatum-A.paspali systems was not affected by O2 partial pressure above the soil, but that of roots alone was greatest under 0.04 atm O2.
