Abstract/Contents:Investigates the spatial distribution of worker turfgrass ants on a turfgrass fairway over time. Also examines the response of ants to pesticide applications. Results of the distribution study showed that ants concentrate in the upper 6 inches of the soil profile during warmer months, and move deeper into the soil as winter approaches. Results of the pesticide test were skewed because both live and dead ants were counted, but it showed "ants being quickly eliminated from the Dursban plot but then returning (at reduced numbers) within a week after application" and "the Tempo plot did not show a significant effect on ant behavior, but again since we cannot say whether the ants counted were alive or dead the effectiveness of Tempo as a control measure remains unclear."
