Abstract/Contents:Discusses evapotranspiration and how it can be used to efficiently manage an irrigation program. Scheduled irrigation using ET as a benchmark has the potential for saving water and nutrients as well as pumping energy while maintaining favorable soil moisture conditions for turfgrass maintenance. In the future it should be possible for research stations or weather stations to develop and disseminate advisories of daily potential ET for turfgrass managers. If the ET rate is known as well as the amount of available soil moisture that can be stored in the root zone of a turfgrass, the amount of irrigation needed to keep moisture levels above the wilt point, but not exceeding the soil's moilture holding capacity, can be determined. The water budget developed by daily water balance and ET requirements clearly demonstrates that just as much irrigation may be required during years of greater than average annual rainfall as during the years of low rainfall.
