Abstract/Contents: | Mowing practices were investigated as a means of recycling turfgrass clippings in situ and reducing the burden of clipping disposal in Dallas, Texas. Raleigh St. Augustinegrass, Rebel tall fescuegrass and common bermudagras field plots received 0, 1.3, 2.7, and 4.0 lb N/1000 sq ft and were subjected to two types of mowing operations to determine their influence on fungal disease severity from June to September 1989. Plots were mowed once weekly at varying clipping heights for the three turfgrass species using either a mulching mower with clippings returned or a standard rotary mower with clippigs bagged and removed. Damaging fungal diseases were not observed with either of the mower regiments during the summer months. Direct accounts of Helminthosporium and leaf rust lesions on bermudagrass and tall fescuegrass and grey leafspot lesions on St. Augustinegrass plots indicated that disease activity was more closely related to prevailing weather conditions than turfgrass cultural regiments used in the study. |
