| Abstract/Contents: | "Four nitrogen (N) rates ranging from 0 to 4 pounds N per 1,000 square feet per year were applied to established tall fescue on an Austin silty clay series soil in 1989 at Dallas, Texas. Effects of N rates on clipping weight, N accumulation, leaf color, chlorophyll content and temperature were examined from October through November 1989. Leaf temperatures decreased, while clipping weights, clipping N concentration, leaf color and chlorophyll content increased with increasing N rates. Clipping dry weights up to 8.0 pounds per 1,000 square feet per month were observed at the highest N rate. Both visual quality ratings and measured SPAD values were adequate qualitative indicators of nitrogen nutritional status. Results suggest a critical nutrient range between 2.95 and 3.14 percent nitrogen for tall fescue sampled October through November in North Central Texas. Research is continuing on soil and tissue nitrogen analysis including other sampling dates, soil condidions and turfgrass species to improve our ability to recommend nitrogen fertilizer rates for turfgrass grown in North Central Texas." |
