| Abstract/Contents: | States that the United States Department of Agriculture in Iowa has initiated several regional Kentucky bluegrass cultivar trials presently being conducted at most of the northern agricultural experiments stations. The test consists of either 80-84 cultivars with each cultivar replicated three times. The three are a high maintenance study that receives 4 lb N/1000 ft2/yr and is irrigated as needed; a low-maintenance study; receives 1 lb N/1000 ft2/yr in September and is not irrigated; and a high maintenance trial 4 lb N/1000 ft2/yr but is not irrigated. In most years cultivars that performed well under high-maintenance conditions did not do as well under-maintenance conditions. Also the three trials were evaluated monthly between May and October. Midnight, CEBVB3965, PSU-173, Ram-1, and Glade were the best of the cultivars in the high-maintenance trial. Midnight, Glade, and Ram-1 have consistently performed well over the past few years and can be considered to be among the best cultivars for Iowa conditions S-21, and Argyle were the top rated cultivars in the low maintenance trial; many cultivars that ranked in the upper 25 positions in 1986 have been ranked much lower in drier years. In choosing cultivars for low maintenance conditions, data from several years should be considered. Conversely, many of the poorer cultivars in that high-maintenance area were the best in the low-maintenance study. |
