Abstract/Contents:Describes a trial to identify regional adaptation of the 48 perennial ryegrass cultivars. Cultivars are evaluated each month of the growing season for turf quality. The trial is maintained at 2-inch mowing height with 3 to 4 lb N/1000ft2 through the growing season and is irrigated when needed to prevent drought. Preemergence herbicide is applied once in the spring and broadleaf herbicide is applied once in September to control weeds. There are no statistical differences among the first 30 evaluations. Several of the top performers in 1987 are experimental numbered cultivars. There has been a considerable amount of breeding and selections of perennial ryegrasses conducted in the past decade and a number of new releases of well adapted cultivars can be expected in future years.
