| Abstract/Contents: | Spurweed (Soliva pterosperma) is a tiny annual plant with lacy leaves 2.5 to 4 cm (1 to 1.6 in.) long that form small mats 5 to 15 cm (2 to 6 in.) wide. Flowers are hidden in the leaves, and plants bloom from April to June. Although spurweed is not a major problem in most Arkansas lawns, it can be troublesome, particularly in shaded low areas with poor turf stand. Tests were conducted in 1980 and 1981 at the University of Arkansas Main Experiment Station in Fayetteville to study the effects of selected herbicides on spurweed control in dormant common bermudagrass turf. Conclusions from the two years of testing show that: 1) Metribuzin or bromoxynil at any of the rates used and methazole at 0.6 kg ai/ha provided excellent control; 2) Glyphosate at 2 or 4 kg ai/ha and methazole at 0.3 kg ai/ha gave intermediate control, and 3)2,4-D, MCPP, and dicamba alone or in selected combinations did not provide acceptable spurweed control. A tankmix of low rates of metribuzin and glyphosate would give excellent control of a broad spectrum of winter weeds in dormant bermudagrass turf. |
