Abstract/Contents:Activated charcoal has been used as a means of reducing the phytotoxic effects of certain preemergence and non-selective herbicides. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinaceae Schreb), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), and Kentucky bluegrass ( Poa pratenses L.) were established by seeding and sodding following the application of bensulide, siduron, DCPA, paraquat and glyphosate to a prepared seed bed. Activated charcoal treatments were applied 1 day after application of herbicides and immediately followed by seeding and sodding. Twenty-four days following treatment, turfgrass density readings and measurements of sod knitting strength were made. Bensulide and DCPA, in the absence of activated charcoal, reduced the seedling density of tall fescue. With all herbicide treatments, including the untreated check, seedling density was increased with the application of 300 pounds per acre of charcoal. Bensulide and DCPA reduced the knitting strength of tall fescue sod when charcoal was not used. Knitting strengths were increased significantly when it was used at the 300 pound rate. In a similar test involving Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, knitting strengths were reduced as a result of bensulide and DCPA applications. They were increased with the use of 300 and 600-pound charcoal treatments.
