Abstract/Contents:Sethoxydim, (BAS 9052 OH), CGA-82725, and Ro 13-8895 at .28 and .84 kg/ha, three recently developed postemergence grass herbicides, were evaluated for preemergence activity on large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.) and sever perennial forage grasses in a greenhouse experiment. Based on plant survival and yield data all three herbicides gave excellent control of crabgrass applied preemergence at both rates. Timothy (Phleum pratense L.) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) did not survive any of the herbicide treatments. Orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) yields were severely reduced by all three chemicals and eliminated by either rate of sethoxydim and by Ro 13-8895 and CGA-82725 at .84 kg/ha. Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were eliminated by sethoxydim and significantly reduced by the other two herbicides except for Ro 13-8895 at .28 kg/ha on perennial ryegrass. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) yields were not significantly different with sethoxydim at .28 kg/ha Ro 13-8895 at either rate or CGA-82725 at the .84 kg/ha rate. Only sethoxydim at the .84 kg/ha rate significantly reduced the yields of bromegrass. Yields of smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.) were not significantly different with sethoxydim at .28 kg/ha, Ro 13-8895 at either rate or CGA-82725 at the .84 kg/ha rate. Only sethoxydim at the .84 kg/ha rate significantly reduced the yields of bromegrass. The results showed that sethoxydim, CGA-82725 and Ro 13-8895 displayed excellent preemergence control of crabgrass, however, response of perennial forage grasses was quite variable. The possibility of selective control of crabgrass in smooth bromegrass seedings from one of these herbicides is suggested by the data presented.
