Abstract/Contents:Baron Kentucky bluegrass ( Poa pratensis L.) was established in the fall of 1973 on a Lodi silt loam soil at VPI & SU Turfgrass Research Center, Blacksburg, Virginia. The growth regulators [MBR 12325 (EC & G), MBR 12325-9, Sustar, CGA 17020 (EC & G), CGA 24705, Ro 76145, and Maintain CF125] were applied in April and repeated in July 1974. One half of each plot was retreated again in April 1975. Effectiveness of growth regulators was measured by plant light and clipping weights above 5 cm prior to check attaining 10 cm. Discoloration was visually recorded using a rating scale. Two weeks prior to 1975 treatments 1-inch sod was placed in 31 x 46 cm frames with 2.5 cm mesh wire on the bottom. At 2 months after treatment root growth was evaluated by determining the energy required to vertically lift the frames with sod via a winch. All regulators except granular MBR 12325 gave some initial discoloration lasting for 4 to 8 weeks. Top growth was significantly reduced for 4 to 6 weeks for all regulators except granular MBR 12325 and Maintain. Summer treatments reduced growth a few weeks longer than spring applications. Weights of clippings were reduced more than height of the bluegrass. Ro 76145 and Maintain caused less discoloration in 1975. Root development was reduced by all regulators irregardless of application frequency. Retreatment in 1975 caused an increase in root inhibition. Sustar gave the most severe effects on roots. In general, growth regulators giving better clipping weight reductions also caused more undesirable discoloration.
