Abstract/Contents: | "The unique beauty of Merion's bunkers was introduced from the architect Hugh Wilson's layout dating back to 1912. Since that time when the course had only 17 original bunkers, Joe Valentine and his long-time foreman, Dominic DiJoseph, altered and added the rest now numbering 120. Many deep, cavernous-type sand hazards are set below fairway and green grade. This requires installation and care of internal drainage. Green hugging, raised back and steep-banked bunkers necessitates a hand maintenance program. Hand scythes are busy through the growing year giving bunkers the natural Madison Avenue treatment. Mechanical triplex mowers handle the mowing beyond the bunker edges where they can be utilized without giving up the natural look. Rotary mowers are not used around bunkers. Sand erosion control benefited terraced bunkers when planted extensively with beach grasses. Scotch Broom is use sparingly around bunkers. Hand and mechanical repair and raking of sand bunkers is commonplace throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons." |
