| Abstract/Contents: | "There are almost no research studies incriminating Rhizoctonia solani as a pathogen of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), notwithstanding a large amount of literature pertaining to this fungus. There are, however, numerous references dealing with a brown patch disease of other turfgrasses, in particular bentgrasses (Agrostis species). In order to breed perennial ryegrass for resistance to R. solani, it w as desirable to inoculate seedlings to determine resistant germplasm. There is much literature dealing with inoculation of mature dicotyledonous plants with R. solani, less with turfgrasses, and virtually none with perennial ryegrass. Therefore, a technique was developed enabling large seedling populations of turfgrasses to be screened rapidly in the greenhouse (2, 5, 7)." |
