Abstract/Contents:"Preemergence crabgrass herbicides have been valuable for turf culture but greater efficiency is needed. The effect of date application, carrier, rate and combinations of herbicide on crabgrass control were studied with turf and non-turf chemicals. The market-type preemerge herbicides available for crabgrass control in turf were studied with regard to season of application, rate of formulation of product with the hope of increasing consistency of performance and amount of control. The turf was predominately a mixture of Kentucky bluegrass with a significant quantity of turf-type ryegrasses. It appeared likely that both early May and late crabgrass occurred. Results and conclusions follow: (1) White preemergence treatment in the last seven to ten days of April has appeared satisfactory in the past, the 1981 results suggest treatment by mid-April to guard against early germination may not give adequate control with rains and germination of summer. (2) The combination of early and late germination appears to create a need for a longer period of preemerge protection for good crabgrass control than has been maintained by some current treatments. (3) Bensulide and oxadiazion have given effective crabgrass control with spray application. (4) Naprapamide (Devinrol) at one to three pounds per acre with bensulide increased crabgrass control without appearing to give an additive effect on turf injury."
