Abstract/Contents: | Field experiments were conducted to evaluate pre- and postemergence activity of UC 77892 (Union Carbide) and postemergence activity of fenoxyprop-ethyl (American Hoechst) on the control of smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.] in Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) lawn. Performance of these herbicides was based upon injury to the turf, effectiveness in crabgrass control, and the duration of crabgrass control. An excellent control (acceptable) of crabgrass was considered 90% and above. UC 77892 at rates of 6.2 to 7.8 kg/ha, when applied either in preemergence or in early postemergence (2-3 leaf stage) to crabgrass, provided good crabgrass control over the entire season. The early postemergence application of the 4F and 80WP formulations of UC 77892 at 6.2 to 7.8 kg/ha showed excellent activity in controlling crabgrass (July 26 rating). August rating demonstrated poor to fair control of crabgrass. The formulations (5G and 5GF) of UC 77892 showed poor control of crabgrass when applied in postemergence. Although these treatments, when applied in preemergence, provided excel lent crabgrass control (July 26). In general, UC 77892 did not provide excellent season-long crabgrass control under Massachusetts conditions. Fenoxyprop-ethyl at 0.09, 0.13, and 0.20 kg/ha, when applied to the 2 to 4 leaf stage of crabgrass (June 14), provided excellent control (July 26). However on August 24, crabgrass control ranged from 38 to 53%. Fenoxyprop-ethyl at 0.13. 0.20, and 0.28 kg/ha applied in postemergence when the crabgrasses were in the 4 leaf to 3 tiller stage (July 5) and at 0.20, 0.28, and 0.39 kg/ha applied in postemergence when the crabgrass were in the 1 to 5 tiller stage (July 19), provided excellent crabgrass control (August 24 rating). Discoloration of the treated turf was noted especially from the July 5 and July 19 application. The addition of DCPA at 11.8 kg/ha to the treatment of fenoxyprop-ethyl at 0.13 kg/ha exhibited added advantage in crabgrass control, especially later in the season. Further research should be directed to finetune the formulation and rate of UC 77892 as a preemergence treatment for crabgrass control. Fenoxyprop-ethyl appears to be a promising postemergence crabgrass herbicide for use in lawn turf. More research information on the tolerance of various cool-season turfgrasses to fenoxyprop-ethyl is needed. |
