Abstract/Contents: | Trials were initiated in 1984 to evaluate pre- and postemergence herbicides applied at various dates and rates for the control of smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.) and to determine the tolerance of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), red fescue (Festuca rubra L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Preemergent March applications of DCPA, oxadiazon, pendimethalin and prodiamine and prodiamine provided excellent crabgrass control. Benefin, bensulide, napropamide, siduron, tridiphane and UC-77892 provided good to excellent control when applied in April, at higher than standard rates and/or with a second application. Tridiphane provided early postemergence control of crabgrass while single applications of HOE-A25-01 and two applications of MSMA materials gave good to excellent control of more mature crabgrass. Results with SC-1084 were variable with the potential for Kentucky bluegrass injury. Bensulide and chloramben were safe to use on red fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass while prodiamine at rates of 1 lb or more may injure all three grasses. Kentucky bluegrass may be injured by ethofumesate, HOE-A25-01 and napropamide while red fescue may be injured by benefin, DCPA, MSMA, oxadiazon or tridiphane. The 3 lb rate of pendimethanlin injured perennial ryegrass. |
