| Abstract/Contents: | Effective, preemergence control of crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.) was provided by sequential applications of UC 77892 80W (5.5 + 2.5 and 6.0 + 3.0 lb ai/A), UC 77892 4F (6.0 + 3.0 lb ai/A) UC AXF 1291 2.2G (4.5 + 2.5 lb ai/A) and oxadiazon 2G (3.0 lb ai/A). Tridiphane (1.0, 2.0 and 1.0 + 1.0 lb ai/A), single application of UC 77892 (5.0 lb ai/A) and early postemergence applications of UC 77892 (5.0 and 6.0 ai/A) failed to provide a satisfactory level of crabgrass control. Fenoxaprop-ethyl applied postemergently on July 2 (0.18 and 0.25 lb ai/A) and Jul y 13, 1984 (0.25 and 0.40 lb ai/A) gave excellent crabgrass control. Fenoxaprop-ethyl applied May 17, 1984 at 0.25 lb ai/A to 'America' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and applied June 14, 1984 at 0.36 lb ai/A to 'America' and a blend of 'Merion', 'Sydsport' and 'Vantage' Kentucky bluegrass, elicited an objectionable level of discoloration. Test results indicate that a single, well-timed application of fenoxaprop-ethyl in early to mid-July will eliminate crabgrass as a weed problem for the remainder of the growing season. The effectiveness of fenoxaprop-ethyl in late summer appears to be related to how environmental conditions affect the vigor of crabgrass. |
