Abstract/Contents:"Butralin is the common name for [4-(1,1-dimethyl)-N-(1-methylpropyl)-2.6 dinitrobenzenamine]. It is a member of the dinitroaniline class of herbicides. Butralin has low water solubility and atmospheric volatility and shows excellent herbicidal activity against annual grassy turf weeds. The commercial product, under the trade name CHIPCO® CHOICE®, will be formulated as a 2.3% granule on a low dust recycled paper byproduct carrier. CHIPCO® CHOICE® will be initially registered on warm and cool season turfgrass species for the control of smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum 'Schreb. ex. Schweig.') DIGIS, large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L.) DIGSA, goosegrass (Eleusine indica L) ELEIN, and annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) POANN. Recommended use rates for application are: 4 to 6 lbs. ai/A for the control of crabgrass species and 6 lbs ai/A for the control of goosegrass and Poa annua. In the Northern United States and the transition zone, excellent season long crabgrass control can be obtained with the 5 lb. ai/A rate while applications of 6 lbs. ai/A are recommended in the southern U.S. Difficult to control weeds such as goosegrass and Poa annua are best controlled with either sequential applications of CHIPCO® CHOICE® or applications timed to occur just before weed germination. Results of over 50 trials nationwide in the past two years have shown that CHIPCO® CHOICE® will provide annual grassy that is comparable to commercial standards such as pendimethalin. CHIPCO® CHOICE ® when used as directed can be applied to all warm and cool season turfgrass species with the exception of buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) 'Engelm.'). It does not injure greens height bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) and has been shown in root health studies to have the least negative impact on root health of commercial dinitoaniline turfgrass herbicides on species such as Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Overseeding can be done effectively if delayed until 3 months after application."
