Abstract/Contents:"Experiments were conducted in 1991 and 1992 at the University of Rhode Island to evaluate the efficacy of preemergeence [preemergence] applications of butralin formulations and several other herbicides in the control of smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemun (Schreb.) Muhl.). The studies were conducted in an established, but undernourished Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.)/red fescue (Festuca spp.) turf mowed at about 2.5 inches. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications of 6 x 10 foot plots. Granular formulations were applied with a drop spreader. In both years, treatments were applied on April 16. Ratings of phytotoxicity to turf and weed control were taken at appropriate intervals as indicated. All herbicide rates are expressed as lb ai/A. In 1991, butralin was tested in several granular carriers as a 2.3G and as a 4E at rates of 4 & 6 lb. and was compared to oxadiazon (Ronstar 2G) at 2&4 lb and pendimethalin (Pre-M 60 WG) at 3 lb as standards. The results indicated that the EC and vemiculite carriers of butralin were the only formulations to provide season long crabgrass control, but the EC also caused some early-season phytotoxicity. Pendimethalin gave excellent control, but also caused significant injury throughout the season. The results were somewhat affected by a severe mid-season drought. In 1992, butralin was applied in several Biodac granular formulations only, with varied percent composition and application rates. Standards used were oxadiazon 2G at 2 & 4 lb in clay vs. Biodac formulations, pendimethalin 1.7G at 3 lb, and benefin (Balan 2.5G) at 2 lb. Combination treatments of oxadiazon 2G at 1 & 2 lb with Mon 25134 0.1G at 0.125 lb were also examined. All treatments provided acceptable season-long crabgrass control with minimal turf injury. The highest crabgrass control ratings were provided by both of the oxadiazon granules at 4 lb, butralin 2.3G at 6 lb, butralin 5G at 6 lb, the oxadiazon/Mon 25134 combination at 2 lb of oxadiazon and pendimethalin. Statistically similar control was provided by butralin 2.3G at 5 lb, 4G at 5 lb, and the oxadiazon/Mon 25134 combination at 1 lb of oxadiazon. Less effective treatments were both oxadiazon granules at 2 lb, butralin 5G at 3 lb followed after 6 weeks by another 2 lb, butralin 6G at 5 lb and benefin. The results demonstrate that granular formulations of butralin can provide safe, effective season-long smooth crabgrass control in cool season grasses provided percent composition and application rates are appropriate."
