Abstract/Contents:Twelve herbicides were used to assess pre- and postemergence crabgrass control in Kentucky bluegrass and creeping red fescue turf. The preemergence materials used were DCPA 5G, 75W, and 6F; butralin 2.3G and 50W; prosulfalin 50W; napropamide 5G; N-chloroacetyl-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)- glycine ethyl ester 4EC (Herc. 22234); N-chloroacetyl-N-(2- methyl-6-ethylphenyl)-glycine isopropyl ester 4EC (Herc. 26910); (N-sec-butyl-2,6-dinitro-3,4-xylidine 2.5G (AC-92390); CGA-24705 15G and 6EC (undisclosed): HOE-22870 2.5G and 3EC (undisclosed); and Herc. 25893 2EC (undisclosed). Best control of crabgrass in both turf species was obtained by DCPA (all formulaitons), the high rate of butralin (both formulaitons), AC-92390 and the high rate of prosulfalin. All rates of granular HOE-22870 provided good crabgrass control in red fescue. Howevere, in bluegrass, HOE-22870 controlled crabgrass only at the high rate or when the low rate was reapplied. Napropamide gave good control in bluegrass, but not in fescue. CGA-24705, HOE-22870 3EC, Herc. 25893, the high rate of Herc. 26910, and the two highest rates of napropamide caused unacceptable injury to creeping red fescue. Except for the Herc. compounds, these materials also injured bluegrass. Control of crabgrass was improved for napropamide when it was applied April 28 rather than March 21, especially for the low rate. Control for AC-92390 and butralin was not affected by application date. The postemergence materials used were DSMA, HOE-22870 2.5G however, control for all materials was not comparable to that obtained with preemergence materials. Severe injury occurred on both turfgrasses after application of HOE-22870 3EC and HOE-23408 3EC. Twelve herbicides were applied before or after the emergence of smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum) in 7-year-old Kentucky bluegrass/red fescue turf on silt loam. Chlorthal-dimethyl at 11.2 kg/ha, butralin 6.72 kg, AC-92390 [2,6-dinitro-N-s-butyl-3,4-xylidine] 4.48 kg and prosulfalin 3.36 kg/ha gave the best pre-emergence control of D. ischaemum in both turfgrasses; granular Hoe-22870 [isobutyl 2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propionate] 6.72 kg/ha gave good control. Treatments applied after the emergence of D. ischaemum were less effective; the best was Hoe-22870 granular at 4.48 kg/ha.
