Abstract/Contents:"This evaluation was to test various insecticides for control of existing SWW populations. The experiment was located at the Ohio State University, OTF Turfgrass Research and Education Center, Columbus, OH. Treatments were applied 9 Sep to plots 5 ft x 6 ft, with 2-ft alleyways between rows, arranged in a RCB design replicated four times. Liquid applications were applied using a 3-ft wide, 3 nozzle boom fitted with TeeJet 8010 nozzles calibrated to deliver 1.5 gal/1000 ft² using compressed CO² at 20 psi. All granular formulations were applied by shaker jar. The ranges were irrigated daily between 05:00 and 06:00 h with approximately 0.25 inch of water starting the morning of 10 Sep. Field conditions at the time of applications were as follows: turf-100% creeping bentgrass; mowed at 0.5 inch; thatch moist, <0.25 inch, loose; soil- very moist, 72°F at 1 inch, 70°F at 3 inches; (soil sample yielded: pH=7.7; P-K-Ca-Mg=49, 289, 3182, 703 lb/acre available nutrient repsectively; cation exchange capacity = 11.3; organic matter = 7.5%; sand-silt-clay = 42%, 31%, 27% respectively= clay loam/loam); weather-clear skies; air temp 74 °F; wind 3-6 mph from west; pests-SWW stages, medium to large larvae (74 and 57 /yd²) as determined by flushing areas at sides of the test plot. To evaluate control of SWW, on 15 Sept (6DAT) a 1.0 yd² area in the center of each plot was drenched with a sap solution (20ml Joy Ultra^D]T^D]M in 2.0 gal water). All insects were collected in 30 ml vials of KAAD preservative and were recorded in the laboratory from each vial. It was noted that SWW and black cutwrom larvae had surfaced from some of the treated plots when the plots were observed 10 Sep between 09:00 and 09:45 h. Data of total SWW per plot were subjected to ANOVA and means were seperated by LSD (@ α =0.1) when appropriate. All the pesticide treatments, except the Tempo Ultra @ 0.07 lb(AI)/acre had three of the four treated plots with SWW or black cutworm larvae on the surface the morning after treatment; the Tempo Ultra treatment had only one plot with SWW. No caterpillars were seen on the untreated check plots. On 15 Sep (6 DAT), an avg of 42.25 SWW was recorded in the check plots. SWW numbers are considered high. The Tempo Ultra @ 0.07 lb (AI)/acre, S8728, VIGORO, S4095 and SPG99-001 prduced 95% control though the ANOVA indicated no significant difference between any of the pesticide treatments. No phytotoxicity was noted in any treatment."
