Abstract/Contents:"Various insecticides were applied for preventive control of BTA adults and larvae as well as curative control of overwintered SWW larvae. The experiment was located at the Ohio State University, OTF Turfgrass Research and Education Center, Columbus, Ohio on Range #5 north. Treatments were applied 9 May to plots 5 ft x 8 ft, with 3 ft alleyways between rows, arranged in a RCB replicated four times. Liquid applications were made using a 3-ft long, 3-nozzle boom, CO² pressurized sprayer with TeeJet 8010 nozzles at 20 psi calibrated to deliver 1.0 gal/1000 ft². No immediate posttreatment irrigation was applied. The ranges were irrigated daily between 05:00 and 06:00 h with approximately 0.25 inch of water starting the morning of 10 May. By 15 Jun the turf was showing signs of drought stress in the afternoons. Hence, additional irrigation of approximately 0.2 inch of water was applied between 13:00 and 14:00 h. Field conditions at 1 hr time of 9-May applications were as follows: turf-80% creeping bentgrass, and 20% annual bluegrass; mowed at 0.375 inches; thatch , moist, loose, 0.25 inch or less; soil-slightly moist, 70°F at 1 inch, 68°F at 3 inches; soil pH = 7.7; P-K-Ca-Mg = 64, 356, 3525, 786 lb/acre available nutrient respectively; cation exchange capacity = 12.5; organic matter = 7.5%; sand-silt-clay = 28%, 39%, 33% respectively (=clay loam); weather-clear; air temp 75°F; 0 to 5 mph wind from east; pests-BTA adults present but not sampled. To evaluate control of BTA adults as well as overwintered SWW, a 1.0 yd² area of each plot (east end) was drenched on 17 May (8 DAT) with a soap solution (20 ml Joy Ultra^D]T^D]M in 2.0 gal water). All insects were collected in 30 ml vials of KAAD preservative. To evaluate BTA larval populations, six 4.25-inch cup cutter cores were removed from the west half of each plot and examined for BTA larvae, pupae and callow adults on 6 July (58 DAT) (replicates 1 & 2) and 7 July (59 DAT) (replicates 3 and 4). Data of total numbers of insects of each group were subjected to ANOVA and means were separated by LSD (α = 0.05) when appropriate. On 17 May (8 DAT), the BTA adult poplutaion was deemed low (5.25 per yd² in untreated checks) and adult control appeared to be excellent to very good by all treatments. The SWW larval population was also considered low to moderate (5.25 per yd² in checks) and all treatments provided excellent control except for Merit which produced moderate reduction. On 6 & 7 Jul (57 and 58 DAT), the BTA larval population was deemed low but consistent(19.5/ft² in checks). All products produced satisfactory control. No phytotoxicity was noted from any of the treatments."
