Abstract/Contents:"Bifenthrin (Talstar^D]T^D]M) was applied alone or in combination with imidacloprid (Merit^D]T^D]M) or chlorpyrifos (Dursban Pro^D]T^D]M) to golf course fairway turf in the spring of 1999 to determine efficacy against annual bluegrass weevil larvae. This test was conducted at Tumble Brook Country Club (West Hartford, CT). Applications were made on 6 May (high over-cast, muggy, light westerly breeze <5 mph, air temp 70°F, soil temp 52°F at 2 inches). Soil pH was 5.3, buffered pH was 6.2, and CEC 14.5 Meq/100 g. The calcium to magnesium ratio was ca. 6.7:1. Treatment plots were 6 x 6 ft, replicated four times, and arranged in CRB. All applications were applied with a watering can using 3 quarts water per plot. Plots were watered in with 0.1 to 0.2 inch irrigation within 1 h after application. Product efficacy was evaluated on 21 Jun by removing 12 cores, 1.85 inches diam, from near the center of each plot. cores were transported to Amherst, MA, where they were broken apart manually and inspected under 10X magnification. Insect counts wer recorded for 3 cores at a time (4 observations per replication, 16 total observations). While all stages were recorded, only healthy larvae, prepupae, and pupae (labelled as "larvae" in the table below) were included in statistical analyses (Fisher's protected LSD, P=0.05), because teneral adults are much more mobile than the immature stages and might migrate into treated plots during the period between application and sampling. The insect populations in the untreated plots were well below the commonly accepted threshold populations (30-40 larvae/sq.ft.) for this insect, and none of the plots had evidence of insect feeding activity. None of the treatments reduced populations significantly relative to the untreated check, whether alone or in tank mixes, and larval populations were significantly higher in the Dursban Pro plots. These data contrast with results from studies in previous years, but the low insect population in the untreated plots made statistical separation elusive."
