Abstract/Contents:"Being able to control smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Screb.) Muhl.] at the time of spring establishment is critical in maintaining a dense, quality turfgrass in the Baltimore-Washington D. C. corridor. The objective for this research was to determine when and at what rate dithiopyr 1EC/0.1G could be applied to spring seeded perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) without causing stand thinning or reduced turfgrass quality. The study site was seeded on 3 April 1992 to a blend of 'Palmer', 'Prelude', and 'Repell' perennial ryegrass. Seedlings began to emerge in large numbers on 13 April 1992. Various rates of dithiopyr 1EC and 0.1G were applied at two (27 April), four (11 May), and six (27 May) weeks after emergence. The stage of growth of the perennial ryegrass seedlings on the three dates of application were 2 to 3 leaf, 3 to 4 leaf and 4-leaf to 3-tiller; respectively. Turfgrass was initially maintained at 2.25 inches, but mowing height was reduced to 1.5 inches on 7 May 1992. Dithiopyr 1EC was applied in 50 gpa at 36 psi using a CO^D2
