Abstract/Contents: | Discusses methods of keeping winter pitches playable in freezing conditions, including overground methods (rock salts, insulation of the surface by leaving longer grass cover or with plastic sheeting, and using "an air house in the form of a plastic tent") and underground methods (undersoil cables or pipe heated electrically or with hot water). Also discusses recent developments of heating pitches using the SubAir system where "air can be forced into the pipework beneath the playing surface which then dissipates through the underlying gravel and rootzone layers to provide a means of sub-surface aeration." States that "both the hot water and air circulation heating systems can provide a very sophisticated means of protecting winter games playing surfaces from frosty ground conditions and deep snow covers...however, such systems are only viable if there is sufficient funding available to cover their installation and running costs." |
