Abstract/Contents:"Consecutive annual spring applications of preemergence herbicides may influence the growth and development of turfgrass. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of herbicides on root growth and development following preemergence herbicide application. Oxadiazon, EXP30910A, pendimethalin, dithiopyr, benefin, and prodiamine at 4.5, 6.7, 3.4, 0.4, 2.2, and 0.8 kb ha⁻¹, respectively, were applied preemergence on May 8, 1992 to large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] on a year-old 'Baron' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Treatments were applied to 1 by 3 m plots with a CO₂ backpack sprayer at a pressure of 152 kPa in 675 L ha⁻¹. The experiment was a randomized completed block design with four replications. Foliar injury to the treated turfgrass was visually rated on a scale of 0 to 100% Stand density was visually rated on a scale of 0 to 9. Nine 9.5 cm diam metal rings were placed 2.7 cm deep in each plot prior to the preemergence application. Three rings from each plot were removed at 4, 8, and 12 WAT. Rooting strength was determined by lifting wire rings buried beneath turf plugs with an apparatus which used a hydraulic jack powered device. Average psi values from three plugs in each plot reflects the root development following treatment application. Turf plugs were also taken from each plot, and were planted in sand culture in the greenhouse. Root lengths, tiller numbers, and dry weights of roots and tillers were determined after six weeks of growth in the greenhouse. All treatments controlled large crabgrass effectively 9 WAT. None of the treatments caused any injury to Kentucky bluegrass 4 and 9 WAT. There were no differences in stand density between treatments 9 WAT. Root growth was normal in all treated plots since no differences in root strength was detected 4 WAT. However, root strength 8 WAT was significantly lower with EXP30910A, pendimethalin, dithiopyr, benefin, and prodiamine than that of the untreated check plot (69 psi). Root strength from the prodiamine (0.8 kg ha⁻¹) treated plot was lowest (42 psi) 8 WAT. The root strength in oxadiazon (4.5 kg ha⁻¹) treated plot was equivalent to the strength of the untreated check plot. At 12 WAT, the dithiopyr treated plot resulted in the lowest root strength (42 psi), followed by pendimethalin, benefin, and prodiamine (48 to 49 psi), and oxadiazon and EXP30910A (55 to 61). Regrowth of treated turf plugs (8 WAT) in sand culture in the greenhouse showed no harmful effects on root length, tiller production, rhizome number, or root dry weight."
