Abstract/Contents:"A significant reduction in yield, shoot growth, root growth and turfgrass quality were found on plants growing in soil with a low phosphorus level compared with growth at higher levels of soil phosphorus (Table 1). The results clearly indicate the need to maintain adequate levels of soil phosphorus for normal growth of bentgrass. The relationships between phosphorus extracted (soil phosphorus levels) by the three solutions and yield, shoot growth and root growth was poor. A better relationship was found between soil phosphorus and ratings for turfgrass quality. The failure to achieve a good relationship raises a serious question about our present ability to formulate appropriate fertilizer recommendations for phosphorus on bentgrass growing in the atypical soils often found in putting greens. However, because there was a reduction in growth of bentgrass at low soil phosphorus levels it is important to monitor these levels." Includes tables showing the relationship between soil test values for phosphorus and turfgrass quality ratings, amount of phosphorus removed by extracting solutions from soils with low phosphorus levels, effects of soil phosphorus on color ratings of penncross creeping bentgrass, and percent leaf tissue phosphorus of penncross creeping bentgrass grown at a low soil phosphorus level.
