Abstract/Contents: | "Trinexapac-ethyl (CGA-163935) is a plant growth regulator developed by CIBA-GEIGY Corporation for management of high maintenance cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Trinexapac-ethyl was tested successfully under an Experimental Use Permit (EUP) program in 1991 and 1992. The EUP program was conducted on golf courses, sod farms, and commercial and residential home lawns. Rates of trinexapac-ethyl ranged from 50 to 900 g ai/ha (0.13 to 2.4 fl. oz./1,000 sq. ft. product). In the northeastern United States, EUP trials were conducted in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, and Michigan. Cool-season turf species treated in these trials included bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Parameters measured in 1992 included mowing reductions, clipping volumes, turf color and quality, effects on overseeding, and tank-mix compatibilities. The EUP program confirmed the effectiveness of trinexapac-ethyl in reducing grass clippings and frequency of mowings on a wide range of turf species. Duration of activity was influenced by rate, environmental conditions, and turf species. A darker green turf color was evident at many locations two to six weeks after application. Bentgrass overseeded one day after treatment germinated normally after an application of trinexapac-ethyl at 150 to 900 g ai/ha. No interactions were noted when trinexapac-ethyl was applied to bentgrass treated six weeks earlier with either mefluidide or paclobutrazol. No incompatibilities were observed with a wide range of tank-mix partners. No detrimental effects were observed in Kentucky bluegrass treated with trinexapac-ethyl at 250 g ai/ha three times per year in a trial conducted over three years." |
