Abstract/Contents: | "By practicing "preventive maintenance", the rights-of-way (R/W) manager can reduce future R/W maintenance costs. Vegetation growing on utility R/W requires responsible management. Left un-managed, vegetation will soon grow into energized conductors creating a hazard and interrupting electrical service vital to our modern society. The type of vegetation found on a R/W is dependent on such factors as surrounding plant communities, soil type, habitat, past land use and past maintenance operations. The R/W manager can plan future vegetation maintenance by careful selection of herbicides and application techniques. Bramble and Byrnes have shown how different plant communities resist tree invasion. Since we know certain plants are more resistant to tree seedling invasion than others, future plant communities ought to be planned. Therefore, we can and should use "preventive maintenance" to help make the vegetation growing on a R/W easier to manage. Because the R/W manager influences long term R/W conditions, it is imperative that he chooses wisely the methods and materials that reduce his future maintenance costs. With proper planning, the R/W manager can decrease projected budget expenditures, minimize environmental impacts and improve public relations." |
