Abstract/Contents: | "This trial was conducted on a bentgrass green at Campbell's Scottish Highlands Golf Course, Salem, NH. Mach-2 was applied at timed intervals (20 May, and 4 Jun) to determine efficacy on early to late stages of ABW larva. A comparison of a single, full rate versus a aplit application of half rates of Talstar was also conducted against ABW larvae. The full and half-rates were applied on 20 May; the second half-rate was applied on 4 Jun. All treatments were applied to 49ft² plots, replicated four times in a RCB design. Treatments were applied with a 7ft boom, on a 2 wheel bicycle-type sprayer, using four 8005 fan-type nozzles, fitted with 50-mesh screens, and delivered with CO² at 40 psi. The volume of water and pesticide mix per plot was 2gal/1000ft². None of the treatments were watered in; however, the green was irrigated daily. The soil texture was loamy san, consisting of the following: sand, 88%; silt, 7%; clay, 5%; organic matter, 2.9%; moisture, 14,2%; pH, 6.2. Weather and soil conditions on both application dates were as follows: (20 May) sky, overcast; wind, near calm; air temp, 55.9°F; soil surface temp, 59.5°F; at 1-inch depth, 60.5°F; (4 Jun) sky, sunny; wind, light breezy; air temp, 63.9°F; soil surface temp, 65.1°F; at 1-inch depth, 66.6°F. On 9 Jun, a 4-inch cup cutter was used to pull four 3-inch deep plugs from each plot; each plug was opened to expose and count live larvae and pupae. The 20 May application of Mach-2 and Talstar treatments were significantly different than the check. Split application of half rates of Talstar were no better than a single full rate. No phytotoxicity was observed." |
