Abstract/Contents: | "Most Kentucky bluegrass, Poa pratensis L., cultivars originated as progenies of singly highly apomictic plants. Essentially all plants in such varieties are genetically identical to each other. They al have the same strengths and also the same weakness. As a result, Kentucky bluegrass cultivars frequently show a greater variation in performance between locations and test than the more genetically variable heterogeneous varieties of fine fescues and perennial ryegrasses. Recognizing this, most turfgrass specialists have recommended blending two ore more Kentucky bluegrass cultivars for most use situations. It is hoped that the weakness of one variety will be covered up by a complementary strength of another component. This may or may not be true depending on a number of complex ecological factors. The objective of this study was to obtain additional information on the composition and long-term performance of a complex blend of Kentucky bluegrass cultivars and selections." Includes a list of Kentucky bluegrass cultivars used in the experiment. Table shows 1 year performance of a blend compared to its original components. Table shows the composition of a blend 7 years after seeding the turf. |
