Abstract/Contents:States that "thatch is recognized as a major turfgrass management problem. Among the problems associated with an excessive thatch layer is an increase in disease of turfgrasses. However, documentation confirming this relationship is limited. Research conducted on this relationship has associated excessive thatch with higher incidences of fusarium blight (2,7,8), Helminthosporium leaf spot (5,11,19), and Pythium blight (10). The purpose of the current study was to determine the relationship of thatch to the incidence of dollar spot, caused by Sclerotinia homeocarpa F. T. Bennett in Merion Kentucky bluegrass turf. The fungicidal effectiveness of benomyl and iprodione when applied to turfgrass plots with an excessive or slight thatch layer was also evaluated." Discusses reasons why thatch plays a part in higher disease incidence, the effects of vertical mowing to control dollar spot by thatch removal. Includes tables showing the relationship between plots that were vertically mowed and not vertically mowed and amount of dollar spot control using chemicals. Table comparing the clipping weight of vertically mowed plots versus not vertically mowed.
