Abstract/Contents:"There is considerable interest in tall fescue Festuca arundinacea as a turfgrass in New Jersty, especially in the southern part of the stae and other regions within the transition zone of the United States. Present water restrictions and economic conditions favor increased use of turfgrass with reduced maintenance requirements. Inherent properties of tall fescue that make it desirable as a turfgrass include good heat and drought tolerance, reduced fertilizer requirements, tolerance of saline and acid soils, and resistance to some troublesome insect problems (Turgeon 1980). New turf-type cultivars (varieties) are becoming available with improvements in properties such as finer leaves, greater persistence under close mowing, greater shoot density, increased wearability, a more attractive appearance, increased shade tolerance and increased resistance to some diseases. The New Jersey Agricultural Experiment station is currently evaluating tall fescue cultivars and selections to provide turf growers with additional information." Includes tables rating the performance of many tall fescue cultivars with varying amounts of fertilization.
