Abstract/Contents:"Tests were conducted in 6.6 x 6.6 ft turf plots planted Sep 1997 and randomized with either Kentucky bluegrass, hard fescues, or turf type tall fescue at the Valley Laboratory, Windsor, CT. Two soil types divided the research field: a loamy sand had 78% sand, 17% silt, and 5% clay for the mineral component and 3.4% organic matter. The sandy loam portion consisted of 73% sand, 20% silt, and 7% clay, with 4.6% organic matter. There were 6 replicates for each treatment in a RCB design: one replicate for each turf species and soil type. Thatch varied from 0-0.5-inch depth. JB adults were caged with sliced apples for food in each per plot from 24 Jul-30 Jul (24 beetles) and 30 July-6 Aug (12 beetles) to ensure oviposition. Sprayable insecticides were applied with a CO₂-pressurized research sprayer and a Tee-Jet 8002 nozzle calibrated to give 86 gpa at 40 psi. Granules were applied by hand with a perforated container. Each application was followed by 0.5 inch of irrigation. The field was sampled 28 Sep-9 Oct. A 1 x 3 ft turf strip was lifted with a sod cutter and larvae counted to a 6-inch depth. Numbers of grubs were square root (JB, EC, and AGB) or log-transformed (OB), subjected to ANOVA, and their treatment means separated with the Student-Newman-Keuls test. Comparisons within a factorial design (March 2 formulation x rate x timing) portion of the test were subjected to analysis of main effects and interactions, and also used in contrasts to evaluate treatment effects. Statistically significant effects (P < 0.05) are as follows: there were fewer JB, EC, and OB larvae where the SC rather than the G formulation of Mach2 was used. For JB, the three earliest timings for Mach-2 products were more effective than the 31 Aug timing. For OB, Dylox was ineffective compared to Mach-2 SC. Mach-2 1.5G improved survival of EC, while the 6 Jul application of Mac2 SC suppressed this species. Dylox provided better control of EC than did Mach-2 1.5G. There were insufficient AGB recovered to discriminate treatment effects for this species.
