Abstract/Contents: | "This test was conducted on mature low-maintenance Kentucky bluegrass turf at the University of Kentucky Spindletop Farm, near Lexington. The turf was on a Maury silt loam soil (pH = 6.2) with negligible thatch. Plots (5 x 6 ft) were arranged in a RCB with 4 replicates. All plots were inoculated twice with field collected adult JB on 17 Jul and then again on 21 Jul. Beetles were enclosed in an 8-inch PVC cylinder driven into the ground approximately 2 inches and covered with pieces of window screen. Insecticide treatments were applied at egg lay (17 Jun), 4 wk PEL (21 Aug), 6 wk PEL (4 sep), and 8 wk PEL (18 Sep). Granular treatments were pre-weighed, mixed with dry sand and applied by gloved hand. Liquid applications were made using a CO² sprayer equiped with four Spraying System 8004 Tee-Jet nozzles that deliver 2109 g pressure per cm². Conditions during application were: 82, 89, 91, and 84°F, respectively with winds 5 mph or less. Following both applications all plots were irrigated with approximately 0.5 inch of water. First post-treatment rainfall was on 19 Jun when 0.24 inch of rain fell. Plots were irrigated periodically between applications in order to maintain the turf. Plots were sampled on 9 Oct by cutting a 2 x 1.5 ft strip, about 3 inches deep with a motorized sod cutter. Sample strips were taken adjacent to the center to avoid the inoculation area. Sod strips were rolled back and examined for grubs. All grubs were collected and taken back to the lab for identification. At the time of sampling, total grub densities in the untreated checks averaged 43.8 grubs per sample (14.6 per ft²). All treatments applied 0-6 wk significantly reduced JB, MC, and total grubs densities below untreated checks. Control of JB with Mach2 differed by formulation at 6 wk PEL, and for JB, MC, and total at 8 wk PEL. In all cases, control was greater with the granular formulation than with the liquid. However, control with both Mach-2 formulations, was never significantly different from the standard Merit and Dylox. There was no evidence of phytotoxicity from any treatment." |
