Abstract/Contents:"Many preemergence turf herbicides are known to affect root growth and development of the turf to which they are applied. The first of a two-year study was conducted at the Rutgers Plant Science Research Center, Adelphia and the Experiment Station Greenhouse in New Brunswick, NJ. in 1991. The objective of the study was to evaluate and compare the effects of several preemergence turf herbicides on root growth and development of Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis L. 'Baron'). Treatments consisted of oxadiazon at 3.36 and 4.48 kg ai ha⁻¹, butralin at 4.48 and 6.72 kg ai ha⁻¹, pendimethalin at 3.36 kg ai ha⁻¹, dithiopyr at 0.42 and 0.56 kg ai ha⁻¹, quinclorac 0.84 and 1.12 kg ai ha⁻¹, oryzalin at 2.24 kg ai ha⁻¹, prodiamine at 2.24 kg ai ha⁻¹, and an untreated check. Treatments were applied on April 25 in 374 L of water ha⁻¹ at 220 kPa using a CO₂-propelled backpack sprayer or with a granular shaker using sand as a diluent. The study consisted of four replications in a completely randomized block design. Turf plugs 6.35 cm in diameter were taken 2 weeks after treatment on May 8. The plugs were then cut to a uniform thickness of 1.9 cm and set into sand in plastic containers. Plugs were watered as needed and fertilized weekly with a liquid starter fertilizer. Plugs were harvested and evaluated at 4-week intervals beginnning June 11. Root lenghts [lengths] and biomass were recorded for each harvest date. Root growth and development were inhibited by prodiamine, oryzalin and pendimethalin. Effects were less with the other herbicides. Where two rates of a herbicide were used the higher rate showed the greatest effect. Inhibition was greatest at the first harvest and decreased in the later harvests."
