Abstract/Contents:"Quinclorac (BAS 514 H) was evaluated alone and in combination with pendimethalin, prodiamine, 2,4-DP-P, metolachlor, and metribuzin for postemergence weed control and safety on established perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) turf in 1991. Combinations were evaluated at several rates and all treatments included the surfactant BAS 090 02S. All treatments were early postemergence applications except for sequential quinclorac treatments, which were early followed by late post. Perennial ryegrass 'Cowboy' plots in a randomized complete block design (three replications) were treated July 2 (early post) and July 15 (late post) using a CO₂-propelled backpack sprayer at 210 kPa in 260 L H₂O/ha. Treatments were rated July 22 and August 13 for phytotoxicity to the turf and for control of large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.]. Turf injury was observed at the early rating date with several treatments, which included 2,4-DP-P alone and in combination with quinclorac; pendimethalin alone; metribuzin alone and with quinclorac; and metolachlor alone. Turf recovered from early injury by the second rating date for most treatments except metribuzin alone. Interestingly, although inury was recorded with the metribuzin plus quinclorac combination, it was substantially reduced compared to metribuzin alone. Injury was also reduced with the quinclorac plus 2,4-DP-P combination compared to 2,4-DP-P alone. All treatments were effective in controlling crabgrass except for 2,4-DP-P in combination with quinclorac, prodiamine, metribuzin, and metolachlor. Control was improved with the addition of quinclorac. Crabgrass control deteriorated by the mid-August date, except for certain quinclorac conbinations and with quinclorac followed by itself."
