Abstract/Contents:"Bifenthrin (Talstar^D]T^D]M) was applied alone or in combination with chlorpyrifos (Dursban Pro^D]T^D]M) to a golf course fairway in the spring of 1999 to determine efficacy against annual bluegrass weevil larvae. This test was conducted at Sleepy Hollow Country Club (Scarborough, NY). Applications were made on 19 Apr (high overcast, light westerly breeze <5 mph, air temp 50°F, soil temp 50°F at 2 inches). Soil pH was 6.3, buffered pH was 6.6, and CEC 24.25 Meq/100 g. Water pH was 5.4. The calcium to magnesium ratio was ca. 4.5:1. Treatment plots were 6 x 6ft, replicated five times, and arranged in a CRB. All applications were applied with a watering can using 3 quarts water per plot. Plots were watered in with 0.1 to 0.2 inch irrigation within 1 h after application. Product efficacy was evaluated on 2 Jun by removing 12 cores, 1.85 inches diam, from near the center of each plot. Cores were transported to Amherst, MA, where they were broken apart manually and inspected under 10X magnification. Insect counts were recorded for 3 cores at a time (4 observations per replication, 16 total observations). While all stages were recorded, only healthy larvae, prepupae, and pupae (labelled as "larvae" in the table below) were included in statistical analyses (Fisher's protected LSD, P=0.05), because teneral adults are much more mobile than the immature stages and might migrate into treated plots during the period between application and sampling. The insect populations in the untreated plots were well above the commonly accepted threshold populations (30-60 larvae/sq. ft.) for this insect, and several of the untreated plots had evidence of insect feeding activity. All the treatments reduced populations significantly compared with the untreated plots. The plots that received Dursban only had significantly more larvae than any of the Talstar plots (alone or in tank mix)."
