Abstract/Contents:"This experiment was conducted on a golf course driving range located in Gulph Mills which was infested with a natural population of white grubs to determine the effectiveness of experimental formulations of CGA293,343. The turfgrass area consisted primarily of tall fescue (20%) Kentucky bluegrass (40%), and perennial ryegrass (40%). Treatment plots were 9 x 6 ft, arranged in a RCB block design and replicated three times. Granular formulatins were applied with a hand-held shaker, and top dressing sand was added to facilitate product distribution. Liquid formulations were applied with a CO2 compressed air sprayer with 4 8002VS TeeJet nozzles mounted on a 6 ft boom, operating at 28 psi, and applied in 817 ml of water/54 ft2 or delivering 4 gal/1000 ft2. At the first treatment time (1 Jun), the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temp, 88°F; soil temp at 1 inch depth, 86°F; soil temp at 2 inch, 79°F; RH, 65%; amt of thatch, 0.5 inch; percent water content (percent by wt), 14.7; water pH, 7.0; application time, mid-morning; and sunny skies. Immediately after application, the experimental area was irrigated with 0.3 inch of water. At the second treatment time (19 Jul), the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temp, 96°F; soil temp at 1 inch depth, 95°F; soil temp at 2 inch, 86°F; RH, 45%; amt of thatch, 0.5 inch; percent water content (percent by wt), 15.7; water pH, 7.0; application time, late-morning; and hazy skies. Immediately after application, the experimental area was irrigated in with 0.2 inch of water. The experimental area was irrigated as and when needed due to severe drought conditions in 1999. General soil conditions were as follows: soil textural class, loam; soil particle size analysis: 50.7% sand, 39.1% silt, 10.2% clay; organic matter, 6.8%; and soil pH, 5.5. Post-treatment counts were made on 20 Sep. Three ft2 sod samples were randomly taken from each replicate, and the total no. of scarab white grubs/ft2 was recorded according to species. The experimental area was infested in the fall of 1998 with an avg of 11.8 white grubs per ft2. all treatments provided significant control of all grubs and NMC, while no treatments provided significant control of JB or AGB because of extremely small JB and AGB grub populations, respectively avg 1.7 and 1.3 grubs ft2. No phytotoxicity was noted."
