Abstract/Contents:"This study was conducted to evaluate registered, over-the-counter insecticides compared with new formulations for curative control of BB. The test was located on the OARDC west campus lawn, Wooster, Ohio. Treatments were applied 11 Jun (early curative) to plots 10 x 10 ft arranged in a RCB replicated four times. The liquid treatment was applied using a CO₂ pressurized sprayer with TeeJet 8010 nozzles at 20 psi calibrated to deliver 2.0 gal/1000 ft₂. All other treatments were granular formulations applied with shaker jars. Approximately 0.25 inch of irrigation was applied. Weather remained hot and dry during most of the experiment. Field conditions at time of applications on 11 Jun were: turf - 80% Kentucky bluegrass, 20% clover/Poa trivialis/P. annua, mowed at 3 inches; no thatch; soil - dry; flat; 76°F at 1 inch, 72°F at 3 inches (soil sample yielded: pH = 5.6; P-K-Ca-Mg = 200, 500, 1714, 338 lb/acre available nutrient, respectively; cation exchange capacity = 8.3; organic matter = 8.5%; sand-silt-clay = 28%, 49%, 23%, respectively = loam); weather - air temp 85°F; clear; 0-5 mph wind from southeast; pests - generally infested by BB in 1998 and numerous stems with larval frass over area. Efficacy data were obtained 30 Jun (19 DAT) by counting the number of live BB larvae, pupae and callow adults in each of five 4.25-inch turf/soil cores taken from each plot in a biased manner (the cores were removed from spots where billbug frass was found in stems). Turf quality was assessed by visually ranking the color (0 = all brown to 9 = dark green) and measuring the ht (to nearest inch). ANOVA was performed on untransformed totals, color ranking, or ht per plot and means separated by LSD at α = 0.05. Products containing diazinon provided the best curative BB control though Spectracide 3X (permethrin) provided significant control. Products containing deltamethrin, bifenthrin, chlorpyrifos, and Mach-2 did not provide satisfactory curative control of BB. Turf quality was generally improved by those products containing fertilizers, even though there was little rain over the span of this experiment. Scotts Turf Builder with Insect Control and VIGORO Lawn Insect Control plus Fertilizer produced the best color and growth, while Scotts Talstar Granular plus fertilizer and InterCept H&G produced slightly better color and growth. No phytotoxicity was observed after any of the treatments."
