Abstract/Contents: | "This trial was conducted on a 3-inch cut rough at Sagamore-Hampton Golf Course, North Hampton, NH. Preventative treatments were applied on 8 Jul to the egg stage and 1^D]s^D]t instar larvae. Curative treatments were applied 9 wk later on 8 Sep to 3^D]r^D]d instar larvae. The plots were 49 ft², replicated 5 times in a RCB design. Liquid treatments were applied using a 7-ft boom on a 2-wheel, bicycle-type CO₂ sprayer; the boom was equipped with four 8005 fan-type nozzles, fitted with 50-mesh screens. The volume of water and insecticide was 2 gal/1000 ft², delivered at 40 psi. The granulars were evenly applied with large salt shakers. The preventatives were watered in immediately after application with 0.25 inch irrigation; the curative treatments were applied during a steady rain (approximately 0.25 inch). Weather conditions on 8 Jul were as follows: sky, clear; wind, 10-15 mph; air temp, 75.4°F; soil surface temp, 79.7°F; at 1-inch depth, 73.8°F. Weather conditions on 8 Sep were as follows: sky, rainy and humid; wind, calm; air temp, 79°F. Soil composition was as follows: texture, loam; sand, 47% silt, 41%; clay, 12%; thatch, 1/16-inch; organic matter, 9.5%; moisture, 18.7%; pH 7.2. The plots were rated for live larvae on 8 Oct; 1 ft² areas of each replicate were sampled after the sod was cut with a sod cutter. Both Thiamethoxam and Merit gave satisfactory preventative control. None of the treatments gave good curative control. No phytotoxicity was observed." |
