Abstract/Contents:"This experiment was conducted on an old established commercial turfgrass area in Somerset, PA, to determine the effectiveness of treatments against a natural HCB population. The turfgreass area consisted primarily of fine leafed fescue. Treatment plots were 5 x 6 ft arranged in a RCB design and replicated 3 times. Granular formulations were applied with a hand held shaker with top dressing sand used to provide even distribution of product. At treatment time (28 Jul), the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temp, 86°F; soil temp at 1 inch depth, 83 °F; soil temp at 2 inch depth, 74°F; RH, 59%; amt of thatch, 0.125 inch; soil textural class, silt loam; soil particle size analysis 29.8% sand, 55.5% silt, 14.7 %clay; (percent water content percent by wt), 4.6%; organic matter, 8.1% water; pH, 7.0; soil pH, 6.1; application time, mid-morning; and overcast skies. Each replicate was irrigated with 0.055 inch of water immediatedly after treatment. HCB was sampled by driving a 6 inch-diam stainless steel cylinder into the turf, filling it with water, and counting the number of HCB nymphs and adults floating to the surface during a 10 min period on two sampling dates, respectively 4 Aug and 24 Aug. Two floatation samples were taken randomly from each replicate, and the total number of HCB from each sample was recorded and converted to a ft² count. Before the treatment, an avg of 69.4 HCB nymphs and adults/ft² were present. Ten treatments provided significant reduction of HCB on 4 Aug, while only eight treatments provided significant reduction on 24 Aug. No phytotoxicity was noted."
