Abstract/Contents:"This experiment was conducted on an old established residential lawn in Somerset, PA, to determine the effectiveness of treatments against a natural HCB population. The turfgrass area consisted primarily of fine leafed fescue. Treatment plots were 5 x 6 ft arranged in a RCB design and replicated 3 times. Liquid formulations were applied by using a CO₂ sprayer with 4 8002VS TeeJet nozzles mounted on a 6 ft boom operating at 28 psi, and applied in 454 ml of water /30 ft² or delivering 4.0 gal/1000ft². At treatment time (11 Aug), the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temp, 63°F; soil temp at 1 inch depth, 61°F; soil temp at 2 inch depth, 62°F; RH, 84%; amt of thatch, 0.125 inch; soil textural class, silt loam; soil particle size analysis: 25.8% sand, 56.1% silt, 18.0% clay; percent water content (percent by wt), 10.6%; organic matter, 7.9% water pH, 7.0; soil pH, 5.7; application time, early morning; and clear skies. HCB was sampled by driving a 6 inch-diam stainless steel cylinder into the turf, filling it with water, and counting the no. of HCB nymphs and adults floating to the surface during a 10 min period 23 Aug and 1 Sep. Two floatation samples were taken randomly from each replicate, and the total no. of HCB from each sample was recorded and converted to a ft² count. An avg of 67.5 HCB life stages were present prior to treatment. Eight treatments provided significant reduction on 23 Aug, while all treatments provided significant control on 1 Sep. No phytotoxicity was noted."
