Abstract/Contents:"A field study of nutrient effects on vegetative establishment (stolons) in a sand root zone was conducted using Tifway and Santa Ana bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon X C. transvaalensis). Fertility regimes tested were dual combinations or single applications of P2O5, K2O, and/or S, each at rates of 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5, or 2 kg 100m-2. N was applied at 1.0 kg 100m-2/month. Percent coverage and 5 plant parameters were observed every 4 days from greenup until plots exceeded 75% coverage by day 41 for Tifway and day 39 for Santa Ana. Those with P2O5 at 1.0 and 1.5 kg 100m-2 took 20% less time. Other regimes did not appear as effective. Significant difference occurred in the number of lateral branches per lateral stem. Results suggest stem branching is a very critical factor in overall rate of coverage and that branching is substantially enhanced by availability of adequate Phosphorus in the soil solution."
