Abstract/Contents:"Insectidies were evaluated for control of various species of white grubs feeding on turf grass in an El Paso, TX city park. Treatments were applied 17 Jun to plots measuring 5 x 10 ft and arranged in a randomized block design with four blocks and four treatments. The park area was equipped with a subsurface irrigation system that delivered approximately 1.5 inches water weekly. Mach-2 2SC was applied using a CO₂ backpack sprayer delivering 50 gpa at 42 psi with 110015VS flat-fan nozzles on a 4 ft boom. The boom had 4 nozzles with 18-inch spacing between nozzles. Mach-2 1.5G and Merit 3G insecticides were applied using a shaker jar. All treated and untreated plots received approximately 1.5 inches irrigation water within 24 h after application. Three soil samples of 1 ft² per plot were taken using a 6-inch wide flat-blade spade that was inserted into the soil to a depth of approximately 4 inches on 19 Sep. Soil and sod from each sample were thoroughly examined for white grub larvae and then 10 samples were replaced. All white grub larvae collected from each sample were counted, placed into vials filled with 90% EtOH, and labeled. All white grub larvae samples were taken to the laboratory and identified to genus (Phyllophaga spp.) and/or species (Cyclocephala). Tests were conducted on soil samples collected from the test site by the Texas A&M University System, Soil Testing Laboratory, El Paso, TX. Soil analysis results are presented in Table 1. Precipitation data were obtained from the National Weather Service in El Paso. Rainfall amounts for the El Paso area were 1.44, 1.99. 1.43, 1.94 in for Jun, Jul, Aug, and Sept respectively. White grub sample data were tested for normality, and if needed, log transformed to improve normality before being subjected ANOVA. Treatment mean separation was performed using protected LSD. Non-transformed data are presented in the table. All analyses were conducted at the 0.05 probability level. All insecticides tested significantly reduced SMC larva population densities relative to the untreated check plots (Table 2). Merit 3G treated plots possessed significantly lower MB larva population densities relative to the plots treated with both formulations of Mach-2 and the untreated check. Plots treated with both formulations of Mach-2 possessed numerically but not signifcantly [significantly] lower population densities of MB relative to the untreated check plots. Soil analysis results"
