Abstract/Contents: | "This test was conducted on an established planting of sassafras trees (Sassafras Albidum) on the University of Kentucky Lexington campus. The trees were approximately 25 ft tall and planted in an annually mulched bed. Branches containing at least five leaves were randomly selected and flagged one month before treatment. In addition to the acetamiprid and fipronil, Orthene Tree, Turf, and Ornamental (acephate) was used as a standard. All treatments were replicated four times with a separate tree being each replicate. Spray treatments were mixed using 1 liter of water and applied using spray nozzles and on a 2-liter bottle. Applications were made either 7 d (7 Jul) or 1 day (13 Jul) before the test and all treated foliage was allowed to weather in the field. No rainfall fell within 24 h after any treatment. Conditions during application were between 82-87°F and winds were <5 mph. The first post-treatment rainfall was 0.25 inch on 10 Jul. Foliage was harvested on 14 Jul and brought back to the lab in coolers. In the lab, Solo plastic cups, labeled according to treatment, were filled to 0.5 inch depth with moist sand. To each cup, two leaves from a treated branch and 25 adult Japanese beetles were added. Cups were then held at 24°C in an environmental chamber until evaluation. Survival was assessed at 3 and 24 h after introduction of the beetles. Beetles able to fly after 3 minutes in the sun were considered normal and those left were scored as dead or moribund. Amount consumed was also evaluated after 24 h only. Fipronil was the only treatment in both residue classes and evaluation times that did not differ significantly from the untreated checks for either survival or damage. With 1 d old residues after 3 h exposure, the highest rate of acetamiprid had significantly lower survival than lower rates of acetamiprid and Orthene. Survival after 24 h on 1 d residues was significantly lower with Orthene, but all rates of acetamiprid had significantly less damage than Orthene treated foliage. With 7 d residues, there was no difference in survival between acetamiprid and Orthene after 3 h of exposure. After 24 h, the two highest rates of acetamiprid were not significantly different from Orthene and these treatments had significantly less damage than all treatments. There were no sign of phytotoxicity resulting from any of the treatments." |
