Abstract/Contents:States that the "selection of soil for sod production is an important step." Advises that "a fine textured soil will normally grow higher quality grass than a sandy soil...However, when the harvested sod is installed on the buyers' soil, a new set of conditions develop. Success depends on how well the sod roots and grows at its new location." Stresses the importance of matching the soil in the sod field with the soil at the home lawn. Suggests that "many problems can be avoided by alerting the buyer to potential difficulties, especially on the subject of site preparation and watering...every effort should be made to match the soils to avoid textural barriers on golf greens, golf tees, athletic fields, and other heavily used recreational areas.
