Abstract/Contents:"Yearly collections of turfgrass clippings in large metropolitan areas account for a significant part of available landfill used for solid waste disposal. A turfgrass clippings management program called the Waste Sver Lawn Care Program was initiated to eliminate the need for clippings disposal. Benefits of recycling clippings are counterbalanced by a greater potential for weed, insect and disease problems. Common bermudagrass field plots receiving 48.9 kg N/ha fertility at 4 or 6 week intervals were subjected to three types of mowing operations to determine their influence on weeds and common diseases during June to October 1984. Plots were mowed once or twice weekly at 3.5cm using a mulching mower or standard rotary mower with clippings either bagged or left standing. Broadleaf weed counts following 16 weeks were lower on plots where clippings were removed; however, damaging disease activity was not observed with any of the treatment programs under conditions of limited rainfall."
