| Abstract/Contents: | Bentazon (3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-(4)3H-one 2,2-dioxide) and cyperquat (1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium chloride) were evaluated for postemergence yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) control in Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Evaluations for phytotoxicity were made on several Kentucky bluegrass varieties, Kentucky 31 fescue (Festuca arundinaceae), Astoria Colonial bentgrass (Agrostis tenuis Sibth.) and Zoysia (Zoysia japonica). Both herbicides effectively controlled nutsedge at 1.5 and 3.0 lb a.i./A. However, bentazon gave much quicker kill than cyperquat. Addition of a surfactant to the spray solution had no influence on the rate or extent of nutsedge kill. No Kentucky bluegrass variety or mixture was injured by the 3.0 lb a.i./A rate of either herbicide. In a spring trial, Kentucky 31 fescue sustained some slight foliar tip necrosis from both herbicides. Astoria Colonial bentgrass was severely injured by cyperquat in the spring trial. |
