Abstract/Contents:"The effects of paclobutrazol on swards of two dwarf cultivars, 'Logro' and 'Elfin', of slender creeping red fescue Festuca rubra and two normal height cultivars, 'Dawson' slender creeping red fescue and 'Highlight', Chewing's fescue Festuca nigrescens were compared in conditions simulating lawn management. In the absence of paclobutrazol the normal cultivars required a mean of 10.9 cuts per annum and the dwarf cultivars 8.2 cuts to keep the sward below 40mm. Paclobutrazol reduced these figures to 5.2 for normal cultivars and 1.4 for dwarfs. Paclobutrazol induced a darker color in all cultivars. It also caused slight scorching from which the normal cultivars recovered better than the dwarfs. Paclobutrazol suppressed the growth of coarse-leaved grass weeds less than that of the sown cultivars. In another experiment, swards of 'Logro' and 'Dawson' were treated with maleic hydrazide or paclobutrazol plus mefluidide. The swards were cut back to 50mm when they reached 100mm in height. Maleic hydrazide had little growth retardant effect, but paclobutrazol plus mefluidide was very effective. In uncut plots paclobutrazol plus mefluidide eliminated seed heads of Logro. It is argues that reductions in mowing requirements can be achieved either by sowing dwarf cultivars or by applying chemical growth retardants. In principle, applying growth retardants to dwarf cultivars could almost eliminate mowing, but there could be aesthetic and weed control problems."
